"Let love and faithfulness never leave You, bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart." -Proverbs 3:3
In Biblical times, having a treasured possession that means the world to you enough to express it outwardly meant a lot. Slaves that were truly devoted to their master would "take him to the door or doorpost and pierce his ear with an awl..." (Exodus 21:6, NIV) Basically they would get pierced with a giant spear just to show their devotion. It blows me away!
Or take the Israelites for example. When God rescued them from Egyptians, there were certain rules God established to make them "holy", or set apart for a purpose. One was to wear a garment with tassels, so that when foreigners came to the land they would know that this God's chosen people.
God is really speaking through Solomon in this verse. It's more than a verse to sew on a pillow, its a call to really hang on to God through devotion to Him. When you start doing this, you produce amazing fruit of the Spirit and have an incredibly blessed life. When we start to be obedient to God instead of yielding to our selfish desires, we experience God's incredible presence like no other!
