In Matthew 10, Jesus is giving his disciples very specific directions. He tells them in Matthew 10:9-10 it says:
"Do not take along any gold or silver or copper in your belts;take no bag for the journey, or extra tunic, or sandals or a staff; for the worker is worth his keep." (NIV)
This Scripture really makes me think, what are the things that are holding me back, the things that I am taking along with my journey that really wears me down? When you're running a marathon obviously you can't bring much, maybe a bottle of water and a fanny pack, but you can't really bring an extra shirt in case you sweat, a bag to hold some assorted things in, new shoes to match your outfit when your done with this marathon...if you brought all that stuff you would be considered ridiculous. It's unnecessarily, right?
This goes the same for our lives. If we bring along some gossip to listen to, some magazines to get the latest scoop, the cute shirt that you just can't let go of, your music, ect. Believe it or not but these things are worldly. Honestly we cannot preach the word of God and lead others if we are still holding on to our worldly desires. It just doesn't work because half of you would be devoted to God and half of you will love the world. It doesn't work, either you like one or the other.
I know its not easy to let go of our worldly things, these things that look good but don't last for long. To tell you the truth, I am struggling with ditching my worldly desire of lying and instead being honest. It's been uber tough. But honestly God is going to provide for us. In Joshua 1:9 and also several times in the Bible it says God, the creator of the Heavens and the Earth and everything inside it, the one who loves us impeccably will NEVER leave or forsake us. He doesn't say "Julia, you need to ditch these desires alone by yourself." Instead He gives us His Word, opportunity to talk to God in prayer, and even a spiritual family for support and love.
So the thing that I ask is, are you taking extra things that you don't need? If so, I ask that the Holy Spirit will give you boldness to take away these things and flee from them. It's not easy. It's a long process that doesn't happen overnight. But ultimately, the God of the universe is on your side, supporting you and putting His Mighty Hand over you. May God bless you and shower you with love.
Connected by the grace of Christ,
Julia Lynne
